Building infrastructure for Black-led movements.
We envision a future where Black communities lead in shaping what safety looks like in Oakland and the city puts its money behind that vision.
FRAMING THE ISSUE
Oakland’s public safety investments aren’t producing the outcomes communities need.
BUILDING A SOLUTION
We're working to change that by developing public safety research, policy and campaign strategy for Black communities and the Black-led organizations that serve them.
Our Issue Areas
-
Crisis responders. Street outreach. Youth programs. Community ambassadors. Oakland has spent decades building public safety programs that do not lead with a badge and a gun.
-
Oakland’s housing crisis is the result of decades of discriminatory policy and disinvestment, requiring both immediate interventions that provide shelter and safety and long-term investments that address the root causes of homelessness.
-
Oakland’s persistent overspending on police overtime has diverted tens of millions of dollars and caused the city to cut workers, programs, and contracts with nonprofits providing essential services. Comprehensive overtime reform would put Oakland in line with cities across California that have gotten their overtime budgets under control, saving millions annually.
